‘The Causeway Quest Experience’

Awakin was commissioned by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board to deliver ‘The Causeway Quest Experience’ as part of the Peace 2 ‘Outward and forward Looking Tourism Region’. The commission gave Awakin the opportunity to promote their innovative approaches to providing unique and inspiring experiences for tourists visiting Northern Ireland.

Recently placed in the ‘Top 5 Coastal Routes in the World’, ‘The Causeway Quest Experience’ offers an enhanced audio-visual guided tour of the Giants Causeway Coast. With such a fabulous and scenic route, the challenge was to support but not detract from this amazing spectacle.

Our approach was to create a series of informative and enlightening visual presentations highlighting themes from ‘First Settlements’, such as the Mesolithic Site of Sandelfort, thought to be Ireland’s first inhabited site to The Ancient Kingdom of Dalriada Ireland’s First Maritime Kingdom, a Celtic, Viking & Anglo-Norman influence on the coast, as well as highlighting a range of fascinating Myths and Legends.

In this stance, our method of enhancing the guided experience has impacted very positively on tourists, who have enjoyed higher levels of understanding and interpretation and a more immersive experience in the areas Culture & Heritage.

Belfast & Titanic Interactive Trail

Belfast Northern Ireland 2006

Belfast City Council & the Northern Ireland Tourist Board responded positively to Awakin’s tender application to develop an interactive handheld experience for Belfast and the Titanic Interactive Trail.

Awakin’s earlier work with ‘Dream Ireland’ and our innovation to research the potential for handheld options, has created a significant opportunity to place Belfast at the forefront of emerging technology developments and enhancing the users experience.

The
‘Belfast & Titanic Interactive Trial' was launched in August 2006, and became the first GPS capable self-guided interactive tour in Northern Ireland. The following extract, ‘Titanic Trail puts Belfast at heart of digital tourism revolution’, is taken from an article on the Travel Daily News website.

Belfast City Council and Northern Ireland Tourist Board have launched the world’s first interactive multi-media digital tourism trail – and, appropriately, it is based around the city’s most famous product, ‘Titanic’.

The ‘Belfast Titanic Trail’ uses the latest GPS-based technology, the Node Explorer, to take visitors ‘back to the future’ – leading them on a tour of the city sites associated with the Titanic story, from the grounds of City Hall to Queen’s Island, finishing by presenting them with a vision of how Titanic Quarter will look.

Using a portable, robust media player, which is both user-friendly and ultra-modern, the Node Explorer – being used for the first time in Belfast – uses a combination of the latest computer technology, still images, video footage, dramatic reconstructions, text and audio clips to take users on a fully interactive trip through time – telling the story of the mighty Titanic and the people associated with her.

The ‘Belfast Titanic Trail’ is envisaged as being the first of many such interactive tours which the Council hopes to develop, in association with its partners.

Alan Clarke

Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Tourist Board

“The digital Titanic Trail will be an amazing experience for our visitors. Not only will they be able to guide themselves through Belfast’s industrial and maritime history but they will do it in a high quality, leading edge manner. It gives us yet another tool by which we can deliver a memorable experience and exceed visitor expectations, thus helping to gain a competitive advantage for Northern Ireland as a tourist destination.”

Causeway Coastal Interactive

In partnership with the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, Awakin have produced a unique blend of content, information and tourist trails for ‘Causeway Coastal Interactive’. The experience builds on the excellent work of the local Regional Tourism Partnership, Causeway Coast and Glens Ltd, and is the first phase of what Awakin hopes to be an overarching Tourism Product Development initiative, providing rich interpretive experiences accessible through a variety of technologies, from the hiring of Node Explorer handhelds, Downloading Podscrolls and Podcasts to Hypertaging information from kiosks and booths for those already in possession of suitable Mulitmedia Phones and Devices.
